How to prepare for Singapore law school interviews: NUS Law edition

The NUS Law interview is known for its challenging moral questions. These questions are designed to assess the applicant’s critical thinking skills, their ability to think outside the box, and their moral compass.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for challenging moral questions in your NUS Law interview:

  • Be prepared. Before your interview, take some time to think about your moral values and how they would inform your answers to challenging moral questions.
  • Be honest. The admissions committee is interested in getting to know the real you. Don’t try to give answers that you think they want to hear.
  • Be respectful. Even if you disagree with the question or the premise of the question, be respectful of the interviewer and their views.
  • Be clear and concise. Explain your reasoning clearly and concisely. Avoid rambling or using jargon.

Here are some examples of challenging moral questions, along the lines of the style of questions often posed in NUS Law Interviews:

  • Should the government be allowed to collect data on its citizens without their consent?
  • Is it morally permissible to use torture to obtain information from a terrorist suspect?
  • Is it morally permissible to create genetically modified humans?
  • Should the government be allowed to regulate social media companies?

Here is a framework on how to approach answering challenging moral questions in your NUS Law interview:

  1. Identify the different sides of the issue. What are the arguments for and against the different positions?
  2. Consider your own moral values. How do your own moral values inform your opinion on the issue?
  3. Be prepared to explain your reasoning. Be able to articulate your thoughts clearly and concisely.
  4. Be respectful of other viewpoints. Even if you disagree with someone, be respectful of their right to have their own opinion.

Here is an example of how you could use this framework to answer the question “Should the government be allowed to collect data on its citizens without their consent?”

Both higher education and further education students surveyed noted the huge benefits of flexible learning, with lecture recordings proving helpful for note-taking and scheduling learning around other aspects of life. Some students enjoy the comfort and convenience of studying at home, as well as feeling more in control.

Identifying the different sides of the issue

The arguments in favor of government data collection include the need to protect national security and prevent crime. The arguments against government data collection include the concern that it could be used to infringe on individual privacy and civil liberties.

Considering your own moral values

Do you value individual privacy more than national security? Do you believe that the government should be able to collect data on its citizens without their consent, even if it is for a legitimate purpose?

Being prepared to explain your reasoning

If you believe that the government should be allowed to collect data on its citizens without their consent, be prepared to explain why. What safeguards are in place to protect individual privacy? How can we ensure that the government does not abuse its power?

Being respectful of other viewpoints

Even if you disagree with the idea of government data collection, be respectful of the people who support it. Recognize that they have legitimate concerns about national security and crime prevention.

By following this framework, you can develop thoughtful and articulate answers to challenging moral questions in your NUS Law interview.
